#183 Catcher In The Rye

Title : Catcher In The Rye
Author : J.D Salinger
Pages : 224
Publisher : Little, Brown & Company

"Catcher in the rye" narrates the story of Holden Caufield, a recent dropout from the renowned school "Pencey" after failing 4 out of 5 subjects that he enrolled in. What's specifically compelling  here is that the novel is constantly written in the first person view, meaning we are actually continuously exposed to his style of thinking stark naked and unfortunately it's not such a pleasant sight. Holden frequently thinks ill of adults and even his colleagues in "Pencey" and acknowledged them as phony. However, the longer you accompany him in his journey, the more you feel sorry for him and his split second judgements of the people around him. Then, we are introduced to his little sister ,Phoebe, who seems to perceive life in a different way than Caufield. Here, we seem to have neutralized views on the actions of Caufield, since his little sister really knows him well, despite her age. Hence, Caulden tells Phoebe of his dream as to be a catcher in the rye, quoting a line from Robert Burns poem, only to be corrected by his little sister, that it should be  "if a body meet a body coming through the rye". The novel ends abruptly when Caufield took his little sister to a carousel ,admiring innocently how she looks while in the carousel.

Note : the abundance of informal language in the novel may need you to recheck the dictionary often. Tl;dr : story about a boy who thinks everyone is phony in this world and is trying to be not phony himself
