This "hugo award and nebula winner" novel tells the story of Ender Wiggins. A third who has been implanted with a monitoring device, a pre requisite to enter battle school. After the International Fleet (I. F) removes Ender's monitoring device, he injured one of his classmates as an act of self defense. When this incident was found out, Colonel Hyrum Graff was sent to Ender's house. Ender explained that his action was to show superiority to avoid future struggles. Impressed, Colonel Graff recruited Ender to join battle school. Colonel Graff quickly isolated Ender, making the other cadets uneasy around him . In battle school, the cadet participate in war simulations in zero gravity, where Ender's tactical prowess was made clear. Graff promotes him to a new squad with raw recruits, but the squad still found success. A jealous commander of another army, Bonzo Madrid picks a fight with Ender outside the simulation, and Ender kills him unknowingly. Ender is then promoted to command school, skipping several years of training. There, Ender meets the legendary Mazer Rackham, in which he became his apprentice. While believing the following war simulations will be controlled by Mazer, Ender unknowingly commands real human spacecraft against the bugger fleets. As the skirmishes goes harder,he is reunited with his old pals from battle school as sub commanders. Despite this, Ender becomes stressed by the battles. For his final test, he sees that his fleet is far outnumbered by the buggers surrounding their queen's homeworld. Hoping to be penalized for his recklessness, he sacrifices most of his fighters to launch a Molecular Disruption Device. The device destroys the planet and the surrounding bugger fleet, thus winning the battle. Mazer was shocked and informed Ender that his simulations were real battles, and that he has won the war. Ender become depressed on learning of this. Stilson and Bonzo's death was also revealed, making him far more stressed. After the end of the bugger wars, Earth's power fought among themselves. Frustrated, Ender joins the colony program to populate the buggers' former world. There, he discovered the egg of the bugger queen. Ender emphatically took the Queen's request to find it a new home so the Queen can be brought to life again. Reflection : 1) Teamwork only when in peril - at the moment where the bugger attacked Earth, all Earth's power stood as one to stop the buggers, but once the war is over, they started bickering amongst themselves. 2) Respect is earned, Trust is gained, Loyalty is returned - Even though, Ender's squad has raw recruits, they liked Ender because of the fair treatment and it consequently makes them a good team 3) Always be one step ahead of the opponent - blowing the planet of the bugger which is an unthinkable strategy , thus winning the war, even by the means of sacrificing many people Foot notes : This is one of the influential books in the 80's. It has also become a recommended read for those in the military service. The Hugo and Nebula awards for this book are the prestigious award for the best of science fiction books.
